East Greenwich Pubs Tour 1988

This tour of the area's history and pubs appeared in the Aug 1988 edition of London Drinker.

This is actually the 2nd of a 2-part piece on Greenwich. As part 1 has a significant overlap of pubs with the earlier 1980 West Greenwich article in our archive, we have focused here on part 2, as it mainly covers the area to the east of the town centre.

Of the 12 pubs featured in part 2: 7 remain open, 2 are currently closed, 2 have been converted to other uses, and 2 have been demolished:

1. Gipsy Moth - open as a pub;
2. Trafalgar Tavern - open as a pub;
3. Yacht Tavern - open as a pub, now known simply as the Yacht;
4. Cutty Sark - open as a pub;
5. Plume of Feathers - open as a pub;
6. Star & Garter - latterly known as Star of Greenwich, closed since 2024;
7. Hardy's - has been closed since 2025;
8. Victoria - closed in 2004, demolished in 2006 and replaced by a residential block;
9. William IV - closed in 2015 and reopened as a restaurant;
10. Duke of Wellington - closed in 2006 and converted into flats;
11. Crown - open as a pub;
12. Vanbrugh Tavern - open as a pub, now known as The Vanbrugh.
